All or None

Joe’s helpful tip for the day – most everything does NOT have to be “all or none”, in my opinion.  I think too many of us, myself included, get caught up in the mindset that if I can’t do all of “it” (whatever “it” is) then there is no point in doing any of it.

I have learned that this just isn’t true and causes us to not do some things that can be very beneficial, even we only do “part” of them.

Here are a few examples so you don’t think I am completely insane (even though I am):

  • Working Out – I was Victim #1 of this mindset for many, many years (sometimes still am). If I couldn’t do my 60 or 90 minute workout, then screw it, I wasn’t doing any of it.  That’s a super bad approach because the reality is that even just 15 minutes of working out is better than ZERO minutes all day long.  Even walking around the block once or twice has a ton of value as opposed to sitting longer for those 10 minutes in your chair or crashing on the couch.  Noodle that one next time you are thinking about working out (I am saying that to myself as well right now)
  • Diet – You not have to have the best diet in the universe – do not try to hold yourself to that standard. Just because you didn’t eat a bucket of lettuce sprinkled with grass clippings and fresh lemons doesn’t mean you are going to Hell.  Don’t just resign to a large bag of chips or the stop at McDonalds just because you didn’t eat perfectly yesterday.  That is a “defeatist” attitude and not helpful.  You are allowed to make mistakes along the way – cut yourself some slack.  Again, it doesn’t have to be all or none – some is better than nothing.  Get back on the “wagon” and keep at it.
  • Health – Beyond just your diet, I’m referring to all things health-related here. Could be medical issues, depression, stress, etc.  You do not have to solve world hunger to make some improvement in your life.  Focus on maybe one at a time, and then again, even some improvement is better than no improvement. Imagine if you improved all of your challenges just 20% each – that adds up!
  • My Vegan Friends – To my vegan friends, in general, you need to just chill out a bit. You can hate me if you want, but I would argue that being 90% plant-based is pretty damn good – much better than sitting down to a 48 oz porterhouse lathered up in butter and cheese.  Too many vegan people believe that it is absolutely ALL or none.  Like the fact that the piece of bread I had this morning wasn’t 100% vegan means that I clearly hate all animals.  Chill the f**k out!  Imagine if the world was even 75% vegan – what a huge difference that would make.  Extremism doesn’t help anyone – try decaf. Take a deep breath. Meditate.  Whatever works for you.
  • Alcohol – This one is near and dear to my heart, unfortunately, but suffice to say that I think that, in general, it is harder to have only one or two drinks on occasion than it is to have NONE. Yeah, that may sound crazy, but I think that there is nothing wrong with enjoying a cocktail or two – as long as that doesn’t always (or usually) turn into 10 or 11 of them.  Having a glass of wine and NOT enjoying the rest of the bottle often takes more control than abstaining entirely.  Just my opinion – not backed by any scientific research or government study that cost $1B.

That’s all for now – I think you get my point.  Bottom line, don’t fall into the “all or none” trap – in general, it is not very helpful.

Now I have to go get that 90 minute workout in!  🙂
